Ask.com Blog Search with BlogLines

by Vincent on June 1st, 2006

Ask Blog SearchAsk.com has finally launched its Blog Search. This new tool searches in weblogs, feeds and newsgroups. All data is based on the feeds and links from online feedreader Bloglines (property of Ask).

The blog search has some nice features worth mentioning, like the timeframe-option where you can search a specific period of time (anytime, last hour, last week, etc). Next to that the results can be sorted by relevance, date or popularity. “Popularity” is determined based on the their “ExpertRank” algorithm and several sources of Bloglines data, such as subscriber count, links, citations, etc. A blog with more links and more subscribers on Bloglines will have more relevance than other blogs. “Relevance” factors in both popularity and freshness to give meaningful recent results!

For each result there is a “more info” link that shows the number of bloglines subscribers for that blog and any citations for that post. And each search result also contains additional options: a binoculars graphic (scroll over for popup with last five posts from result), “Save” (save result to a clipboard), Subscribe (to a feed reader) and Post To (Digg, Delicous, Newsvine etc.).

Feeds related to the query are listed on the right sidebar, along with RSS information for subscriptions (via TechCrunch).

Well, I think Ask did a good job with this searchtool and it clearly has a good platform to build on. Bloglines has a very big subscriber base and is generating an index with over 1.5 billion archived blog posts, and keeping it updated with new blog posts (within 5 minutes of us receiving the posts). I’m looking forward to see more enhancements from Ask!
