Attention.XML
There aren’t any examples but i do hear the term “attention.xml” a lot these days. What is attention.xml? According to the Technorati Developers Wiki it is an open standard, built on open source, that helps you keep track of what you’ve read, what you’re spending time on, and what you should be paying attention to. In the age of information overload, that sounds good!
In attention.xml all feeds and posts that you read are being tracked. For each post or feed it tracks how much time you spend on it, the last time you checked it and an optional rating of the information. Based on this it should be possible to advice you what to read and where you should spend your time on! Imagine what that could mean for MSN Messenger, mIRC, Winamp, BitTorrent, etc…
Clive Thompson at the New York Times has a long article, “Meet the Life Hackers“, that’s about attention and information overload (via Greg Linden) and Steve Gillmor wrote about the idea back in March. I’m sure we’re gonna hear more about this… soon. The question is from whom?

A Feed Is Born » River of news - RSS, Webfeeds and Information Overload!

[…] Scoble has the first trackback and explains the river of news approach. It is sorta like a daily newspaper. How do you read a newspaper? You scan it! To make it “scanable” you need an editor who decides what the most important story of the day is, and you need journalists that are trained to write in reverse-pyramid style (the important facts of the story are always at the beginning). The River of News works better if there is some kind of “attention” support. So we’re talking about a clever newsreader! […]
A Feed Is Born » Thoughts on Attention - RSS, Webfeeds and Information Overload!

[…] Alex Barnett made a list with 20 thoughts relating Attention. A quick summary is that he thinks Attention data is much more than just clickstreams (check), it has to be an online/portable/shareable/secure service (check), there will be multiple, competing and overlapping Attention data formats (too bad, but I do think this will also be true). And at nr20 he gives some examples of Attention data: Tagclouds, wishlists, reading lists and book catalogs, blogrolls, RSS / OPML lists, contacts, social networks and buddy lists, photo collections and photostream, playlists and music collections, bookmarks, blogs, game lists, community memberships, calendar entries, video collections and lists, favourite places and social guides, subscriptions lists. Great that he put some effort in trying to describe what is needed for an attention data service. But I would also like to know which logic should be used to store Attention data. What do you want to store? As I wrote before (attention.xml), I think all feeds and posts that you read should be tracked. For each post or feed the software should track how much time you spend on it, the last time you checked it and an optional rating of the information. Based on this it should be possible to advice what to read and where you should spend your time on? This entry was posted on Thursday, January 12th, 2006 and is filed under Attention.
